Before I left I was inspired by stories of grandeur in the American West. What I found however, were small bleak towns. Towns far past their prime, settled into a slow decay: vestiges of a former time. I became interested in the mundane stories of life in these places. A teenager riding his bicycle twenty miles to buy a sword, a boat for sale in the middle of Nebraska, a pile of discarded fire hydrants and muffled voices through hotel walls. Years ago people went there with dreams of grandeur and hopes for a new beginning on stolen land. When I moved to Idaho in 2014 I began to explore my new surroundings. I found myself drawn to towns that the economy had forgotten years ago, and I met the people that lived there. These places have boarded up windows, derelict movie theaters and bars that open at 10:00am. These happenings can still be felt in this place, the accumulated energies swirling through everyone and everything. Hazy recollections of these narratives now serve as inspiration for my photographs. I photograph my family, friends, and strangers and create optical and pyrotechnic phenomena which serves to create a palpable low hum of menace and disquiet emanating from the land and population. Through the images, I suggest a disorienting place with a damaged landscape and humans who are possibly toxic. Many of the materials I use are manufactured as international signs of distress. I have sent several dozens of these signals into the night. It was open at full capacity for six months. It, and the surrounding base, have been closed since then. I came there in August, 2024. The gate busted open and there was a chain across it. Camera in hand, I walked in. All the buildings were open, birds were flying in and out. This is the only image I made of the pyramid while in the base. Locals had told me that people that used to work here later died from rare forms of cancer. As I was walking out a member of the local fire department was at the gate. We exchanged pleasantries and he warned me that the base had security cameras. I left very shortly after. I developed an entire backstory for this character. I told people that I was a war hero, who had many trophies from my conquests on the foggy surface of Mars. It is about ninety miles outside of town, mostly on dirt roads. I stopped at a roadside memorial on my way. This was one of the quietest, most peaceful places I’d ever been. No cars, no birds, no bugs. Just the wind, and my breathing. The air was clean and dry. I could have stayed there for hours. These happenings can still be felt in this place, the accumulated energies swirling through everyone and everything. Hazy recollections of these narratives now serve as inspiration for my photographs. I photograph my family, friends, and strangers and create optical and pyrotechnic phenomena which serves to create a palpable low hum of menace and disquiet emanating from the land and population. Through the images, I suggest a disorienting place with a damaged landscape and humans who are possibly toxic. Many of the materials I use are manufactured as international signs of distress. I have sent several dozens of these signals into the night. He had just be realized on parole after a 45 year sentence. I spent time photographing in his apartment and interviewing him about his life. During my winter break I found out that Larry had been arrested for parole violations and reincarcerated. In 2020 a man reached out to me requesting to use information from a previous artist statement for Larry’s obituary. I had paused at a rest stop as the sun was setting and made a number of short videos over the next couple hours. I was drawn to this place in that moment. It is a bridge in Mechanic Falls, ME and I first went there in 2018 I believe. I don't know why I stopped or why I went under it, but I found a quiet place with lots of graffiti. One piece said, "THE FULL MOON PILL HAS GOT ME OUT AT NIGHT." I found that particularly haunting, and thought about basing an entire series around those words. That is, until I found out those are lyrics from a Fall Out Boy song. I enjoy returning to places to make new pieces. In 2021 the prompt was "twist your words and turn away" and it seems to connect to my prompt this year. When I came back this year I found the river frozen and new graffiti but I still could read the words of Fall Out Boy. It felt nice there, maybe a little spooky as the sun was going down. Melting snow was dripping into the river and cars passing overhead made a short droning sound. I used a DIY disposable lens for this piece. Using lasers, found objects and crystals I double exposed expired large format film while RESOURCE + performed a live ambiant soundscape. It is funny to post a video of something that isn't intended to be seen, but rather perceived. The performance was about an hour long but my camera stopped recording at 30 minutes. It was open at full capacity for six months. It, and the surrounding base, have been closed since then. I came there in August, 2024. The gate busted open and there was a chain across it. All the buildings were open, birds were flying in and out. Locals had told me that people that used to work here later died from rare forms of cancer.
